Pop Galo by Joana Vasconcelos

14 de December, 2016

Pop Galo is the new Joana Vasconcelos’ masterpiece.
It is a reinterpretation of the famous portuguese Galo de Barcelos with 10 meters high, about four tons and composed of 16,000 LEDs and 17,000 tiles, produced and hand painted in Aleluia Cerâmicas, S.A. in its Sintra unit, Viúva Lamego.

Aleluia Cerâmicas, S.A. worked in close collaboration with the artist in the development of techniques that allowed adapting the tiles to the curved forms of the masterpiece, a challenge readily accepted and successfully overcome.

Opened on November 7, in Ribeira das Naus, in the context of the Web Summit, in Lisbon, this work reinterprets one of the popular icons of national culture, the Galo de Barcelos.
Joana Vasconcelos decided to revisit it, crossing traditional elements such as the tile with technology, through LED lights.

The Pop Galo designation stems from the relation with pop culture, the mix of unusual materials, such as tiles and LED lights which, together, recreate a symbol of Portuguese culture adapted to modern times through the introduction of technology.

Pop Galo will be until the end of November at Ribeira das Naus, in Lisbon, and then will be all around the world; In January will travel to Beijing, China, for the celebrations of the Rooster Chinese New Year, taking the Portuguese culture and one of its greatest symbols, the tile, to other cultures.

Aleluia Cerâmicas, S.A. is proud, once again, to take part in such masterpiece that will, certainly, be a reference of the culture and of the noble art of Portuguese tiles.
